We Tell the Business to Look at the Data — Why Don't CTOs?

TLDR: We demand data-driven decisions from every department — then run engineering on intuition and status meetings. Jira is a storytelling system. Git is a source of truth. It’s time CTOs practiced what they preach. Start free → app.intelig.ai

We always tell the business to “go look at the data.”

So why don’t we?

The CTO Blind Spot

  • Sales has dashboards
  • Marketing lives in funnels
  • Finance tracks every dollar
  • Engineering? Vibes. Jira tickets. Standups. “Feels slower lately.”

We demand data-driven decisions from everyone else, while running engineering on intuition and status meetings.

Jira Is Not Data

  • Jira tells you what someone typed, not what actually happened
  • Commits, diffs, PRs, reverts, rollbacks = real execution data
  • We built tooling around reporting, not reality

Jira is a storytelling system. Git is a source of truth.

The Questions You Should Be Able to Answer

When was the last time you looked at:

  • PR cycle time trends?
  • Rework rate?
  • Commit quality vs cost?
  • Team-level execution drift?

Not anecdotes. Not tickets. Actual data.

The Realization

If this can be modeled, it can be observed. If it can be observed, it can be automated.

I didn’t set out to replace the CTO. I just kept asking why we weren’t looking at our own data.

The Future CTO

The future CTO doesn’t manage people. They manage signals.

If engineering is the engine of the company, why are we driving it without a dashboard?

Start With One Question

Here’s a challenge for every CTO reading this: go ask your VP of Engineering what your rework rate is. Not your bug count — your rework rate. How much code gets written, shipped, and then rewritten within 30 days? If nobody can answer that, you’re not data-driven. You’re narrative-driven. And narratives are comfortable, but they’re expensive.

The gap between what engineering leaders say is happening and what the code says is happening — that gap is where money, time, and talent disappear. InteliG exists to close it.
